March has been marvellous down at Watergate Bay and Westcountry Surf School, despite the random cold weather snaps!
And the best bit? Easter is just around the corner. Egg-cellent!
Easter is the start of Newquay’s summer season so it’s a perfect time to book a lesson at the surf school and get ahead of the crowds. But just in case you are feeling a little worried about your winter bod as spring arrives, we’ve got you covered with these easy moves to get you surf fit in no time.
Your core is at the, er, core of surfing. As you paddle out you’ll be keeping your torso engaged to maintain balance on the board. When you’re on a wave, your core will help you get to your feet and when you’re up and cruising, your core is where your turns begin. Start to strengthen your core simply with a plank challenge, do a little more each day and build up slowly. Other great exercises to add to your routine for a tight core include Jack-knives and Russian-twists.
HIIT It Up
HIIT training is ideal for getting your surf fitness ship shape. Like surfing, HIIT training focusses on short sharp bursts of energy (ideal preparation for paddling to catch a wave and popping up). HIIT training works by pushing your body and lungs and then letting them rest briefly before going for it again. This helps your body respond to strain and recover from it, so you’ll not only be surfing better, you’ll be surfing for longer too.
Burpees = Land Pop-Ups
If you’re really pushed for time or ideas, a daily quota of burpees is probably the one thing you can do to get your body ready to surf a.s.a.p. The motion of a burpee is very similar to a pop up on a board and can help you work on getting to your feet quickly. Obviously, it’s a little bit harder with a moving board and water beneath you but it’s a great starting point!
It goes without saying that the best way to get better at surfing is to just get surfing! If you’re worried about feeling a bit egg shaped after a week of chocolate don’t worry, a surf lesson with us will burn off all your excess calories and is an excellent way to pass the Easter holidays.
